WWE Retro Series 8 – Doink the Clown Action Figure (2022 Mattel)
Few WWF characters from the early-1990s New Generation era left as lasting an impression as Doink the Clown — the sinister heel prankster most famously portrayed by Matt Borne whose psychological edge made him genuinely unsettling. The Mattel Retro line exists precisely to honor that golden age of wrestling toys, deliberately echoing the chunky, rounded sculpt style of the classic Hasbro WWF figures, and Series 8 delivers one of the most character-perfect entries in the line. Sustained collector demand for Doink has driven Mattel to release him across Elite, Ultimate Edition, and Mattel Creations channels simultaneously — but the Retro format's Hasbro-homage styling and built-in pull-back action feature make this the definitive nostalgia pick.
This is a carded example from the 2022 Official Retro Pack release (item code HMC57). The card presents in solid, displayable condition with vibrant orange-bordered front art, the period-correct WWF scratch logo, and a clear bubble housing the figure securely. The card back features line-art portraits of all four Series 8 figures — Doink, Tugboat, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, and Lex Luger — alongside a pull-back action feature diagram ("Pull Back Doink / Makes Rivals Go 'Round!") and Doink's bio. UKCA and MC/CA regulatory marks are present. The figure itself features bold, accurate clown-costume paint in red, blue, orange, and yellow with a white-faced sculpted mask and green hair true to the character's TV appearance.
