COBI presents an extraordinary set that bridges World War II history with architectural beauty! The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church in Sainte-Mère-Église, located in Normandy, France, became legendary due to the dramatic events of June 6, 1944, during the D-Day operation. American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division were dropped into the area to secure the town, but soldier John Steele's parachute caught on the church tower during the jump.
Hanging helplessly from the tower, Steele watched the intense battle unfold below him. Though wounded, he survived the ordeal. A figure depicting John Steele was later permanently installed on the church tower to honor this remarkable moment. The memory of these brave liberators continues to be celebrated in this special place.
Following the war, the church received new stained glass windows featuring paratroopers and related symbols as a tribute to the soldiers. Today, the Sainte-Mère-Église church attracts visitors from around the world who come to pay their respects and learn about this pivotal moment in history. This iconic location serves as a powerful reminder of the courageous paratroopers and the critical role D-Day played in shaping our modern world.
